Can Sophie and the BFG make this Christmas a bit more phizz-whizzing?

Join them as they gather the ingredients for a very special Christmas meal.

Teaching Ideas:

English:

  • Use some of our fantastic Roald Dahl resources, like our Roald Dahl Fact Cards, Timeline Posters and Questions and Roald Dahl biography with Comprehension Questions.
  • Try some of our great ideas for teaching The BFG.
  • Explore the ideas and resources in our Roald Dahl Topic Guide.
  • Make a list of the invented words in the video (such as snorkler) and invent some of your own.
  • Write character descriptions for Sophie and the BFG. What kind of vocabulary could you use to describe them?
  • Write the story from Sophie’s point of view.
  • Create some additional dialogue between the BFG and Sophie.
  • Stop the video at 0:09 and write a description of the BFG’s dream cave. Compare the cave in the advert to the descriptions in the book.
  • Invent an alternative title for the advert.
  • Write an advert script featuring a different Roald Dahl character.
  • Write a social media post from the point of view of the man using the metal detector. What does he think happened?
  • Write a sequel – what happened next?

Science:

Computing:

  • CGI effects have been used in this advert. Design a CGI character that could appear in it.

Design Technology:

Art:

  • Create your own version of the dream cave.
  • Use our template to create an image of a dream in a jar.

Music:

  • Listen to the soundtrack. What effect does it have on the viewer? Why do you think that music was chosen? Could you compose your own soundtrack?

Geography:

  • Collect some food packaging and work out where the food has come from. Using a world map or Google Maps, show where it came from and how far it has travelled.
  • Research regional foods (like stilton cheese). What regional foods are produced where you live?
  • Using this article find the locations used to film the advert on Google Maps or a map of the area.

PSHE:

  • Think about the emotions experienced by Sophie and the BFG during the advert. Make a list of them. What do you notice? Are they positive or negative emotions? Why do you think they feel like that?
