• Retell the story from Dave’s point of view.
• Retell the story from the point of view of the mouse that appears in the illustrations.
• Read the story, then retell it to a friend without looking at the book. How much of it can you remember?
• Think of different words to describe Dave.
• Think of different words to describe Dave’s dinners.
• Write a diary that outlines the main events of a normal day for Dave.
• Write a diary that outlines the events of this unusual day.
• At one point in the story, the animals tell each other about Dave’s problem. Can you think of synonyms for ‘told’ and rewrite the sentences? Does this improve the story or not? Why?
• Write a newspaper article about the sighting of a cat flying through the air.

• Use Art software to create an illustration of Dave (or the other animals in the story).

• Design a machine that can safely rescue Dave from the cat flap.
• Make a catapult that can help Dave to consume the beans!

• Create a new page for the book, where the animals try a different method of helping Dave to escape from the cat flap.

• Think about how Dave felt about his problem. What could the other animals do to help him overcome his embarrassment?
