On the day Class Three went to sea, they saw donkeys dancing on the quay. They saw some sea lions skimming stones, but they didn’t see the skull and crossbones! They’re not a group to be daunted however, and with a little bit of help from an octopus they meet on the way, the pirates are overpowered, and Class Three are left to enjoy their trip to the sea – and follow the pirates’ treasure map!
Teaching Ideas and Resources:
- Make a list of all of the rhyming words in the book. Can you think of other words that rhyme with these? Could you make your own individual / class rhyming dictionary and use this in your writing in the future?
- Create a new page for the book using your own rhyming words.
- Retell the story from one of the children’s (or the teacher’s) points of view.
- Write a new story featuring the pirates Rotten Teeth, Fish-Breath Frank and Pirate Bogey-Nose.
- Write a story about an amazing school trip that your class might have.
- Imagine that you could make friends with an octopus. What adventures might you have?
- Create a newspaper report about the class trip.
- The author has written another book in this series called Class Two at the Zoo. Could you write another book with a similar rhyming title?
- Use a reference book to find out about one of the creatures mentioned in the book. Could you write your own report to teach other people about that creature?
- Use a painting program to draw a picture of a pirate / ship / treasure chest / octopus.
- Make an animation of a pirate ship sailing in the sea.
- Create an imaginary ‘ocean’ in your classroom by placing pictures or models of an island / pirate ship / octopus on the floor. Can you program a robot to travel between the different pictures / objects.
- Draw a picture of another pirate who might appear in this book.
- Find lots of pirates resources on our Pirates theme.
- Draw a map that shows the locations of the different parts of the story.
- Draw a new treasure map for the pirates to use.
