The posters below include images of zebras with horizontal, vertical and diagonal lines. Print them out and use them as a teaching or a classroom display resource!

Here are some other activities that could be used to help children learn about horizontal, vertical and diagonal lines:

  • Ask your children to ‘hunt’ around your classroom / school for different types of lines. They could record their discoveries using words or by drawing pictures of the lines in the places they were found.
  • Use cameras / mobile devices to take photos of horizontal, vertical and diagonal lines.
  • Use the results from your ‘line hunting’ for statistics / data handling activities. Which type of line was the most common?
  • Look at images of different types of structures (e.g. buildings and bridges). Can they find different types of lines on them?
  • Give the children a selection of 2D shapes and ask them to find different types of lines on them. Can they draw the diagonal lines inside the shapes? You could use the templates on this page to get started.
  • Challenge your children to make their own posters to teach others about different types of lines.
  • Ask your students to create a picture that only uses horizontal, vertical and diagonal lines.
