Estimation With Shoes!

This is an estimation activity that I used during my final teaching practice with reception children.

Using unifix cubes or something similar, as a whole class, I asked the children to estimate how many cubes I could fit into my shoe – they loved the idea of using something that belonged to them during this activity.

They then took their own shoe off and had to estimate how many cubes they could fit in their shoe, recorded it and then filled their shoe with the cubes and counted them. They then compared their estimate to see how close they were.

This activity could easily be extended using other everyday objects.
