Share this delightful counting book with your class and then try some of our suggested classroom activities!

Teaching Ideas and Resources:

Could you create your own counting story that follows a similar structure?
How many different adjectives can you find in the book (e.g. famished, silent, sharp, angry). Can you make a list of other adjectives?
Retell the same story using longer sentences or paragraphs on each page.
Retell the story from the fox’s point of view. Could you tell it from the chickens’ point of view too?
Stop reading the book after ‘Six silent steps’. Discuss what might happen next. Could you write your own ending?
Write a set of instructions to teach people how to look after chickens.
Write a recipe that uses eggs.

As you read the story, count the different things that are mentioned.
How many different animals are mentioned in the story? How many eyes do they have in total? How many legs do they all have?

Retell the story (or your own counting story) in the form of a Powerpoint / multimedia presentation. Could you add photos of your own illustrations and record audio to accompany the text?
Design a game in which a fox has to catch some chickens… or in which the chickens have to chase the fox away.

Read the author’s note at the back of the book to find out how she created the illustrations. Could you use a technique to create your own images?

The story is full of suspense and makes you want to read on to find out what happens next. Could you compose a melody to accompany a reading of the story?
