This activity combines printing, symmetry, 3-D work and composition.
Start with either scrapbook paper or create your own “wallpaper” background. Cut the rim off of a styrofoam plate, then make a straight cut across the top to create the opening of the bowl to use as a printing block.
Brainstorm with the children what they see in a fishbowl, either their own or one they have seen. Have the children add gravel, at least three fish, sea grass, or anything else they would like to add – don’t forget the air bubbles… The “bowls” are then printed with blue ink or mixed blue and turquoise ink or use paints on a white sheet of paper.
After these are dried, they are cut out, leaving some white space at the top to signify the water would not go all the way to the top. On a separate sheet of paper, the “wallpaper” is either glued on or created. A triangle is then cut out of brown paper to make the table. It is glued on at a slant to give the table more interest. The fish bowl is then placed on the table.
Then with a 4 X 6 coloured paper folded in half, children learn how to make a symmetrical vase by drawing a wiggly line from the top of the fold to the bottom. Once it is cut out, green construction paper “stems” are glued to the back of the vase, and then all are added to the side of the bowl on the table.
Once the vase is in place, small strips of tissue paper are bunched up and glued onto the stems as flowers. When the children are done, they have a patterned background, a printed fishbowl, a symmetrical vase and 3-D flowers – not to mention a beautiful collage.
I have done this project with 3 -5-year-olds as well. They loved it.
