Tom Clarke is a man who lives and breathes hunting for treasure. What began as a hobby in his early twenties quickly became a full-fledged obsession.

Watch this video with your children, and then try some of our teaching and activity ideas below.

Teaching Ideas and Resources:

English

  • Choose a friend / family member and interview them about a hobby that they have.
  • Choose a hobby that you have. Write a report explaining what it is and why you enjoy it.
  • Can you try to find somebody who has a metal detector and ask them about their discoveries?
  • Make a list of questions that you would like to ask Tom Clarke if you had the chance. How might he respond to them?
  • Write a diary entry from Tom’s point of view about his day.
  • Tom explains that his hobby is like an obsession. What does this mean?
  • Write a story about a child who uses a metal detector and makes an amazing discovery.

Maths

  • Tom shares a list of things that he has found. Can you estimate the size / weight of these items? Could you order them from smallest to largest?
  • Estimate the value of the items that Tom has found.

  • Draw a picture of something that you would like to discover using a metal detector.

Geography

  • Look at a map of your local area. Where would be some interesting locations to explore with a metal detector?

History

  • Make a timeline of Tom’s life using the information in the video.
  • Pause the video when it shows some of the items that Tom has found. Can you identify what they are? When were they made? What materials are they made from?
