Capital Letter Sorting

Can your children sort these words and phrases to identify those that should start with a capital letter and those that shouldn’t?

The downloadable file below includes a collection of fifty words and phrases and a table on which your students can record their answers. Some of the words / phrases could be added to both columns on the chart, so these may require further discussion, e.g. may (‘You may get wet!’) and May (‘This month is May’).

When your children have sorted all of the words, you could ask them to think of other words to add to each column on the table. They could also be challenged to write a sentence that includes some of the words on the grid.

Our ‘When do we use capital letters?’ poster may be a useful teaching / display resource to accompany this activity.
