One sunny morning, a happy little Hugasaurus waves goodbye to her Pappysaur and sets off into the world on her own for the very first time. When she finds a playground, some new friends welcome her to their games. But it isn’t long before the other little dinosaurs start to squabble.

English:

• Read the other books in this series *. Which is your favourite? Why? Could you write your own ‘DinoFeelings’ book?
• Retell the story from the Hugasaurus’ point of view.
• Think of some speech / thought bubbles to accompany the illustrations.
• Make a list of all of the rhyming words in the book. Can you find other words that rhyme with them?
• Write some instructions for a new game the dinosaurs could play together.
• Write a book review for ‘The Hugasaurus’. Explain what you did and didn’t like about it.
• Could you act out some scenes from the story? How might you react to the different situations that take place?

Maths:

• Count the different types of dinosaurs shown in the illustrations.

Science:

• Look at the illustrations and research some of the extinct creatures shown.
• Research and present facts about real dinosaurs. When and where did they live? What did they eat?

Computing:

• Design a game in which the Hugasaurus has to find her friends and give them each a hug.
• Create an animation that shows a dinosaur moving.
• Collect statistics about different types of dinosaurs into a spreadsheet or database.

Design Technology:

• Can you create a model of the Hugasaurus?
• Design a new playground where the dinosaurs can play nicely together.
• Can you make some puppets to represent the different dinosaurs and use them to retell the story?

Art:

• Retell this story (or a part of it) in the form of a comic strip.
• Create your own character based on a dinosaur.
• Look at the ways the illustrations show the Hugasaurus’s different emotions in the story. Can you create a dinosaur character and draw it in different ways to show its emotions?

Music:

• Could you compose a melody to accompany some of the rhyming verses in this book?

PSHE:

• How do hugs make you feel?
• Can you think of a time when you have argued with a friend? How did you resolve the problem?
• Think of some speech bubbles to show what the Hugasaurus could say to the other dinosaurs when they are unhappy.
• Design a poster that has helpful tips to encourage the dinosaurs to play nicely together. What could they do if somebody is feeling upset or angry?
• Think of some games and activities that might encourage the dinosaurs to work as a team and play nicely together.
