Molly’s toy rabbit, Tatty Ratty, is lost again.
But don’t worry, he’s on his way back to her – and there are lots of adventures on the way, including flying on a dragon, and jumping aboard a pirate ship…. all before waiting for her to come and pick him back up in the toyshop.
English:
- Retell the story from Tatty-Ratty’s point of view.
- Think of some speech / thought bubbles to add to the illustrations.
- Choose one of the scenarios Molly imagines about Tatty-Ratty and develop it into a longer story.
- Choose the main events of the story and write them on cards. Jumble them up and ask a friend to put them in the correct order.
- Write some postcards or letters from Tatty-Ratty to Molly about his adventures. Write a letter in reply from Molly.
- Make a new page for the story in which Molly imagines a new adventure for Tatty-Ratty.
- Create a new story about a lost toy. What adventures might it have?
- Choose some of the speech in the story and rewrite it using reported / indirect speech.
- Make a ‘Lost’ poster to encourage people to get in touch if they find Tatty-Ratty.
Maths:
- Estimate how far Tatty-Ratty travelled in this story.
Science:
- What materials are soft toys made from? Why are these materials used?
- Learn about rabbits and create a report about them.
- Test which materials would make a good pirate ship for Tatty-Ratty.
Computing:
- Design a game in which Tatty-Ratty has to travel home to Molly.
- Make an animation of Tatty-Ratty moving on a ship, in a train or in a rocket.
- Look at this narrated version of this story. Could you record your own and add visual / audio effects?
Design Technology:
- Make a model of a train, ship or rocket that Tatty-Ratty can use to return home.
- Could you make a 3D model of Tatty-Ratty?
- Design a box or bag that Molly can use to keep Tatty-Ratty safe in the future.
- Sew a simple soft toy for a friend.
Art:
- Create some pictures of your favourite toy.
- Make a collage that shows Tatty-Ratty.
- Draw or paint a new imagined world for Tatty-Ratty to explore.
Music:
- Create some pirate or space-themed soundscapes.
Geography:
- Create a map showing the different locations in the story. Draw a picture of Tatty Ratty in each place, showing what he does there.
- Draw a map to help Tatty-Ratty find his way home.
History:
- Learn about the history of toys. How have they changed over the years?
- Ask younger and older family members about their favourite toys. Make a timeline that shows these.
Languages:
- Learn the names of different toys in other languages.
- Role play visiting a toy shop in a different language.
PSHE:
- Look at Molly’s facial expressions in the illustrations. How is she feeling at different points?
- Have you ever lost something? How did you feel? Think of some strategies to help somebody who has lost something.
- What toys are special to you? Why are some toys more special than others?
