Mole loves the hustle and bustle, laughter and excitement of being with her friends. But sometimes she needs a little space for herself. To stop and breathe. To think and rest.
Can she find a quiet place all of her own? Maybe with a little help from her friends.
English:
- Choose a character and retell the story from their point of view? How might Rabbit’s version be different to Mole’s?
- Make an invitation from Beaver to other animals, encouraging them to keep warm in the treehouse.
- Write a letter from Mole to her friends, explaining why she sometimes needs space from others.
- Think of some speech / thought bubbles to add to the illustrations.
- Write an alternative ending in which Mole finds a different quiet place.
- Could you write a new story about Mole and her friends?
- Write a new story about a character who is looking for some quiet place of their own.
Maths:
- How many animals join Beaver and Mole in their treehouse? How many eyes do they have in total? How many tails? How many legs?
- Create a timeline that shows the main events in the story.
Science:
- Choose one of the animals and learn more about it. Where is its natural habitat? How is it adapted to living in that environment? What does it eat? Does it have any predators?
- Choose two of the animals and make a list of similarities and differences between them.
- Investigate sounds by measuring and comparing different types of noises.
- How might this woodland habitat change in different seasons?
Computing:
- Create an animation of Mole floating around on her boat.
- Look around your school or local area for loud and quiet places, taking photos of each one. Could you use these in a multimedia presentation?
Design Technology:
- Could you create a model of Mole’s new boat?
- Make puppets or models of the characters and use them to retell the story.
- Design and make a new scarf to keep Mole warm when he is outside at night.
- Design a new treehouse with a separate space for Mole to have some quiet time away from the other animals.
Art:
- Look at the illustration of Mole on the front cover. Could you draw some birds’ eye pictures of a person or place?
- Create your own drawings or paintings of the woodland habitats shown in the illustrations.
- Draw some pictures of the forest or treehouse from Mole’s point of view.
Music:
- Compose a short song that Squirrel might sing to the other animals.
- Squirrel plays a ukulele. How does this instrument make sounds?
- Compose a quiet soundscape to help Mole relax in her quiet place.
- Create a calming playlist to help you relax after a busy time with friends.
Geography:
- Make a story map that shows the locations in the book. Add labels to show what happened in each place.
PSHE:
- What is your favourite quiet place? Why is it special? How does it compare to your friends’ special places?
- Do you prefer to be in busy places or quiet places? Why?
- Create a feelings diary to illustrate how the Mole felt as the story progressed.
