English:

• Make some new characters with alliterative names (e.g. Bertie Baxter and Martha Moonbeam).
• Look at the front cover of the book and discuss what you think it might be about. Who is Florence? What does the illustration tell us about her?
• Make some instructions to help Florence look after her pet dog, Scruff.
• Write a persuasive letter from Florence, explaining why she wants straight hair.
• Write a persuasive letter to Florence, telling her not to straighten her hair.
• Retell the story from Florence’s (or Ben’s) point of view.
• Gather the rhyming words and use them to make a rhyming dictionary.

• Design some symmetrical haircuts.

Science:

• Florence’s hair crackles when she puts her jumper on. Find out more about static electricity to see why this happens.

Computing:

• Use art software to create some illustrations of Florence with and without frizzy hair.
• Use video tools to record a ‘read aloud’ version of this story. Here is an example:

Design Technology:

• Design a new bedroom for Florence.
• Design and make some new clothes for her.
• Use recycled materials to make a hairbrush.
• Design some packaging for a new product that will help Florence keep her hair frizzy.

Art:

• Make your own illustrations of Florence before and after her visit to the hairdresser.
• Create a new hairstyle for Florence.
• Make a comic strip that retells this story.
• Cut out photos of your face, stick them onto some paper and design some new hairstyles for yourself.

Geography:

• Make a map that includes the different places shown in the illustrations. Add labels to show what happened in each place.

Physical Education:

• Design some outdoor games that Florence and Ben can play together.

PSHE:

• At first, Florence likes her brother’s neat and flat hair. What do you like about your best friend?
• Choose a sibling or a friend and make a list of ways you are similar / different to them.
• Act out scenes from the story and discuss how the characters are feeling at different points.
• Discuss why it is important to wash our hair and clean our bodies.
• At the start of the story, Florence wants to have hair like her brother. Discuss what self-acceptance means and explore the importance of embracing differences.
