Little Mo lives with his father and mother in a cave during prehistoric times. Everything is new to him ― snow, ice, and most frightening of all, dinosaurs! When a pack of triceratops decide to make Little Mo’s cave their home, Mo has to muster all his courage to scare them away.
English:
- Rewrite the story from Little Mo’s point of view.
- Write a diary entry by Little Mo about his adventure.
- At one point in the story, the monsters roar. Can you think of other examples of onomatopoeia?
- Can you find examples of superlatives in the story (e.g. biggest, hugest)? Can you think of any more?
- Write a letter from Little Mo to his family to explain what happened to the cave.
- Create a character profile of Little Mo.
- Make a list of words and phrases to describe Little Mo. Make another list to describe the great snow monsters. How are the two lists similar / different?
- Look through the story and find any words that you are not familiar with.
- Write a sequel to this story. What other adventures might Little Mo have? You could also write a new story to explain what happens to the snow monsters next.
- Record a ‘read aloud’ video to retell this story. Here is an example for inspiration:
Maths:
- Estimate the heights of Little Mo and the snow monster.
Science:
- At the end of the story. There are monster footprints in the snow. Can you compare the footprints of different types of animals?
- Investigate how water can change state from a liquid to a solid / gas.
- Discuss how animals can survive in cold climates. How are they adapted to living in those habitats?
Computing:
- Design a game in which Little Mo must escape from a monster chasing him.
- Use graphics software to create some pictures of Little Mo.
- Make a stop-motion animation in which a giant snowball chases away the monsters.
Design Technology:
- Make a puppet of Little Mo and use it to retell the story.
- Design a new shelter in which Little Mo and his family (or the great snow monsters) could live.
- Design some big and scary monsters. You could make 3D models using paper mache, or some 2D characters with flexible limbs (join these using split pins / paper fasteners).
Art:
- Look at the scenes of snowy mountains on the inside covers. Could you create similar illustrations?
- Create your own paper snowflakes. Here is a tutorial video that you can follow:
- Make a collage of a snow monster.
- Design a new cover for this book.
Geography:
- Little Mo experiences snow for the first time in this story. What other types of weather / precipitation can you think of?
- Learn how people adapt to living in cold, snowy environments.
History:
- Find out about explorers who have ventured into snowy and icy parts of the world.
PSHE:
- Read the story together and stop at different points to discuss how Little Mo might feel.
- Little Mo faces his fears to scare away the snow monsters. Can you think of a time when you faced a fear?
