Soft and Sticky are best friends, but Soft’s fluff always gets up Sticky’s nose, and Sticky sticks like glue to Soft! After one last argument, they decide to end their friendship – life will be better apart, won’t it? But they soon find they miss each other much more than they imagined…
English:
- Write your own story about two characters who are opposite in some way, but end the story as friends.
- Retell the story from Mr Stick’s or Mr Soft’s point of view.
- Make a list of adjectives to describe each character (and / or their parts of the loft). You could also write a character profile for each of them.
- Make a list of similarities / differences between the two characters.
- Rewrite some of the direct speech as indirect / reported speech.
- Write a letter from one of the characters to the other at the time when they went their separate ways. How do they feel about being apart?
- Collect all the rhyming words in this story. Can you think of other words that rhyme with these?
- Look at the text and find words and phrases that show how the characters are feeling without using emotions vocabulary (e.g. sulking, sat in silence).
- Look at the boxes that show the fun that Mr Stick and Mr Soft have away from each other. Choose one of these and write a diary entry to describe that day.
- Write an alternative ending for this story that adds a third character. Could they help Mr Stick and Mr Soft become friends again?
- Record a read aloud video based on this story. Here is an example:
Science:
- Gather different materials and think of ways to describe them. Are they sticky or soft? How do we use different types of materials?
Computing:
- Use graphics software to make some pictures of the characters.
- Make a game in which Mr Stick has to find Mr Soft by following a trail of fluff.
Design Technology:
- Design a new home where Mr Stick and Mr Soft can live together happily.
- Use junk materials to make some models of them.
Art:
- Draw your own pictures of the characters.
- Make a collage using soft, sticky materials.
- Retell part of the story in the form of a comic strip.
Music:
- Compose a melody that could be used for an animated version of this story.
PSHE:
- Mr Stick and Mr Soft are good friends, even though they are quite different. Make a list of similarities and differences between you and your friends.
- Have you ever had an argument with a friend? How did you resolve this?
- Think of some times when you enjoy being around others, and times when you may need some space on your own.
