Food Factory
I used this idea with my Yr 5+6 class during a Persuasive Writing unit. I gave it to them before the unit so that I could demonstrate their emotions later...
I told them that a letter had arrived that morning and the Head had asked for their opinions.
After reading and discussing the letter, they all wanted the playground. However, after gently letting them unravel the letter, they eventually asked what an abattoir was.
When they finally understood completely, only one person still wanted the business there. There were all sorts of points raised about parents of future children coming to the school, children transferring, noise, mess, etc..
The activity that followed was to write to the Headteacher to tell her what they thought about the proposal. The responses were amazing! Of course I had to tell them that it was all a joke – before the parents were up in arms!
Download the accompanying letter below. This may need to be personalised according to your own situation.
