Jubilee

After a sudden burst of wind in Buckingham Palace, the Queen's hat gets carried away around London. Fortunately, a trustworthy guard and a playful corgi run after it!​​

Teaching Ideas and Resources:

English

  • Write some alternative titles for this film.
  • Write the story from the point of view of the guard.
  • Make a storyboard of the film.
  • Write some social media posts from people who saw it, for example, make Instagram style captions for different photos. What might people think was happening? What might the hashtag be?
  • Write a newspaper report of the guard on the clock face of Big Ben.
  • At several points in the story, the guard and the dog either get or almost get the hat. Make a graph of how this is used in the story. What is the effect? Can you use this effect in your own writing?
  • Corgis are the Queen’s favourite breed of dog. Research them and write a fact file about them. This site is a good place to start.
  • Write a narration of the film.
  • Write the next part of the story, what happens?

  • Watch the section from 3:05 to 3:48, Write an explanation of why the balloon floats away. What do you think it is filled with?​

Computing

  • Use a program such as Scratch to make a game where the guard tries to catch the hat. ​

Design Technology

  • The coach in the film is the Diamond Jubilee State Coach. It is built from many historical materials, including wood from the Mary Rose and the Mayflower, and part of a Dambuster plane from World War II. Design a coach for the Queen. What historical elements could you include? There is some more detailed information on this webpage.  ​

Music

  • Research the national anthems of different countries, and listen to a few of them.
  • Learn and sing the national anthem “God save the Queen”.

Geography

  • Use a map or Google maps to map the London landmarks in the film.​

  • Use the Big Ben sequence(4:57 - 5:52)  as inspiration for some balance activities.​

PSHE

  • Watch the sequence where the guard crosses at a crossing (1:06 - 1:9) and discuss safe places to cross the road.
  • Use the sequence showing the homeless man (1:38 - 1:55) to begin a discussion. Framework have some excellent resources to support this.
  • Twice the guard misses the hat because he follows rules (crossing the road and keep off the grass). Do you think he was right to obey the rules or would it have been OK not to ?
