Why do you Like it?

Many students are able to tell you that they like something e.g. a McDonald's burger. What they can't tell you is why they enjoyed that, or why they didn't enjoy, that burger! One way of encouraging them to support their opinion is by following the active lesson below.

Materials:

  • Snack food e.g. different crisps or fruits.
  • A sheet of paper divided into columns. The heading for each column should contain the name of the food being used.

Begin the lesson by writing necessary vocab. on the board and explaining the words. For example, crunchy, texture, salty etc. Try explaining the words by action e.g. for crunchy take a crisp and eat in so that the crunch is audible!! Next, tell them that today they are going to get the chance to try these foods. Pass the food around, or create a food table and get the students to help themselves to at least three different types of food. Next, pass the paper (Item 2) around and ask students to write their name under the food that they enjoyed most.

When you get the list back divide the students into small groups and get them to explain to their group why they enjoyed, or did not enjoy, a particular food. As the teacher, you will walk around and assist the students with language etc.

Finally, you can get the students to present their opinion orally or in writing. If you choose the later, get them to state their opinion in the first sentence of the paragraph e.g topic sentence or if writing a 3 point essay as the thesis statement.

Tip: Try using food items that students are not familiar with. Their facial expressions as they look at dried fruit etc and their responses always makes the class laugh. Be careful, culturally and religiously some food items may not be acceptable. Have fun.
