The Princess and the Peas

Age Range: 5 - 11

Lily-Rose May will not eat her peas. Even when her father turns them into the most fabulous smoothies, shakes or cupcakes, Lily can always tell they are there and turns her little nose up at them. Luckily, the doctor knows exactly what to do. He diagnoses an incurable case of Princess-itus and sends Lily to live at the palace. Unfortunately for Lily-Rose May, the perfect food for a princess is ...well ...that would be telling!

Teaching Ideas and Resources:

English

  • Make a list of adjectives that are used to describe Lily-Rose May.
  • Make a list of all of the rhyming words in the story.
  • Read the first page up to ‘UNTIL…’ and write an alternative version of the story.
  • Look at the use of speech marks in the story. Can you think of some rules to teach others how to use them?
  • How many synonyms of ‘said’ have been used in the story?
  • Make a persuasive poster to encourage more people to eat peas.
  • If you were going to live like a princess / prince at the palace, what things would you need to take with you?
  • Make a list of the pros / cons of being a princess / prince.
  • Lily-Rose promises to write to her dad every day. Can you write some of these letters (e.g. after she has just arrived, when she hears about the jobs that she has to do)?
  • Retell the story from Lily-Rose’s point of view.
  • Retell the story from her daddy’s point of view.

Maths

  • Estimate how many peas have been drawn in the illustrations.
  • Count how many times the author has used different types of punctuation (e.g. full stops, commas, exclamation marks, speech marks). Use this data to create some graphs and charts.
  • Create a copy of the bill that the doctor leaves with Lily-Rose’s daddy. What services will he charge for (e.g. checking her symptoms, reading the story, choosing her treatment)?
  • Make a daily timetable for a princess. What activities are planned for her? When will she have to do the different jobs?

Science

  • Make a list of healthy food that Lily-Rose May could eat instead of peas.
  • Make a list of recipes that use peas!

Computing

  • Design the cover of the book that the doctor reads to Lily-Rose and her daddy.
  • Scan the QR code on the inside cover of the book and listen to the audio recording. Could you record your own audio version of this story (with music and sound effects)?
  • A number of different fonts have been used in the book. Can you see what fonts are available on your computer? What types of writing / story could each one be used for?
  • Take a photo of yourself and use painting software to turn yourself into a prince / princess.

Art

  • Draw a picture of yourself as a princess / prince. Can you print a photo of your head and draw the body of a princess / prince around it?

Geography

  • Draw a map of the inside of the palace. Look at the illustrations for some ideas of the rooms that might be included.
