On the Way Home

"Well," said Claire, "there was a very big, bad wolf... Claire has hurt her knee so she sets off home to tell her mum all about it. On the way she meets her friends and tells them how the fall happened. But just how did it happen . . .? Was she dropped by a wolf, a slithering snake, an enormous dragon or a hairy gorilla?!

Teaching Ideas and Resources:

English

  • Can you write a new story with the title 'On the Way Home'?
  • Before reading the story, look at the front cover. What might happen to the girl on the way home?
  • Can you make a new page for the book, in which Claire tells another friends an unusual way that she hurt her knee? Use the page template provided (see Resources below).
  • There are lots of characters from different stories in the book, e.g. the big, bad wolf, the woodcutter, gigantic giant. Can you think of other books that they appear in?
  • Can you act out the story with some friends?
  • There is a lot of speech in the story. Can you change some of it into reported speech?
  • Write a newspaper report about one of the adventures that Claire says she had.
  • Try some role play activities involving Claire. Can you interview her to find out how she felt at different points in the story? Could you find out why she gave so many different reasons for hurting her knee?

Science

  • Can you find out about different types of snakes? What type might have wrapped itself around Claire in the story?
  • Find out how our bodies heal when we get hurt.

Computing

  • Make an animation to show one of the excuses that Claire gave for hurting her knee.

Design Technology

  • Design a new playground for Claire to play in. Can you think of different safety features to reduce the chance of children hurting themselves?

Art

  • Use the storyboard template to make a new page for the book, in which Claire tells a new friend a different story about how she hurt her knee.

Geography

  • Draw a map showing Claire's route home and the people that she met along the way. How far might she have travelled?

PSHE

  • Can you find out about first aid. How can we help each other if there is an accident?
  • Could you make a poster to teach people basic first aid skills?
