Shape Art

Age Range: 7 - 11

I've used this idea in a Y5/6 class (9-10 year olds) but it can be used for all levels.

We choose photographs from newspapers (natgeo mags are ideal) and try to reconstruct the picture using 2D shapes.

When we display our work we have the photograph and the 2D picture next to it. The 'extra for experts' stage is trying to find the right 3D shapes to build the image.

It is a timely exercise, but in small groups it can be done! It supports children's understanding of 2 and 3 dimensional shapes and it gives the lesson purpose. It also makes a dazzling display!
