Using Video Games

If you've never used video games in your classroom before, the Myst games might be a useful starting point for taking advantage of other games in your lessons:

  • Discuss with the children what their favourite video games are. What do they like about them? What do they think could be improved?
  • Think about video game characters. Who are main characters in the games that they play? What is special about the character? How does that help within the game? The children could also design their own character and create a profile for him / her.
  • Explore locations used in games. Some games take place in space (e.g. Super Mario Galaxy) whilst others are based underwater (e.g. Endless Ocean). Which locations are used in the children's favourite games? How are these locations used by the characters? Does the location affect the story and / or gameplay? The children could also make up their own video game landscapes.
  • Music and sound effects are another important part of the video game design process. See this page for more information and ideas.
  • Find out how games are made. How do developers make games? What things do they need to think about? How do they go about creating / testing / improving / publishing their games?
  • The children could also make their own computer games. Tools like 2Do It Yourself and Scratch allow pupils to make their own games easily.

The following presentation, from Ideas to Inspire, shows a selection of other games that you could also use:
