Use the Journals

Contributed by:

Age Range: 5 to 11

The journals in the Myst games offer lots of educational opportunities. You could use them to:

  • Search for clues which might help you to solve some of the puzzles.
  • Look for examples of interesting vocabulary... children could record these somewhere else and try to use them in their own writing later.
  • Find different examples of punctuation and discuss why they have been used in particular places.
  • Develop their inference / deduction skills by thinking about the author's thoughts / feelings at the point when the journal entry was written. How were they feeling? Why?

Journal

  • Use them for comprehension activities - ask them questions about what they have read in the journals. You can download a set of comprehension questions PDF Document based on the journals in Myst IV. Could they also set comprehension questions for each other?
  • Use them for guided reading activities.

Pupils could also write their own journals as they explore the games. They could also write the next part of a character's journal based on what they have read so far.

You can view copies of the journals online at this site.
