Morris the Martian

Age Range: 5 - 11

For this activity, you will need a roamer or other suitable ICT equipment whose movements can be controlled by inputting instructions. The children should be familiar with the instructions for this equipment before they begin the activity.

Space map

1) The children can work individually for this activity or in small groups (max. 3 or 4).

2) Before they begin, you will need a copy of the information sheet (which can be found below), a roamer, and a large map of the solar system, on which the roamer can move. This map may be drawn on a large piece of paper, or might consist of individual pictures of the planets stuck to the floor - it might be a good idea to laminate these if you wish to use them again.

The layout of the planets (as shown on the worksheet) is shown to the right. To ensure consistency, the actual map which the roamer moves on should be set out in this way. If you are drawing the map on a large piece of paper, you can just copy this. If you are making individual planets, stick them to the floor in the correct layout.

3) Give the child(ren) a copy of the information sheet, which outlines the activity. Morris the Martian (i.e. the roamer) has to start at the sun, and stop off at each of the planets on his way to Pluto, where he will see his mummy! The child(ren) should move Morris (using the shortest route) by working out the appropriate instructions and inputting them into the roamer. They should also record the correct instructions on the blank space on the worksheet.
