The Magician's Hat
Subject: Music
(This idea was contributed by Sue Storry)
Age Range: 5 to 11

Draw a magician's hat (Cone shape!). Divide it up into sections, say 3 x 4. Colour diff sections diff colours, red, blue, green. There should also be a blank space at the base of the hat with no colour...this is a relief......silence!!

Give each child a percussion instrument and tell them what colour they are. You then conduct using drum stick and point to each section in turn or jump about from section to section. The children play!

You can extend this idea by saying that as you point further up the hat, they should play more quietly and when near the base of the hat, play loud. You could also get them to play a rhythm for that section.

This is such a great thing to use and can be extended however you want to....use voices not instruments perhaps... it just gets every child involved.

Have fun.
