Give the children a simple rhythm to clap. Each table then uses a specific object which is to hand, such as a pencil, a ruler, a crayon or felt tipped pen. One table could just use clapping. Each table taps the rhythm in turn.
Children then can discuss each table's pitch and dynamics. You can extend by altering the dynamics, or use crescendo and diminuendo. Ask for a volunteer 'conductor'! Try the same with different types of scrap paper or card, folded in different ways to produce varying sounds
This is ideal if you are short of good percussion instruments in your school, or just to do it anyway.
