Helping with Copying
Topic: Special Needs
(This idea was contributed by Heather)
Age Range: 5 to 11

Children who cannot read often cannot copy from the board or copy a whole sentence on paper in front of them. They may lack the confidence or the skills.

We make a laminated A4 sheet with a sentence sized 'window' cut out. Two slits, at right angles to the window and to one side are used to lace a laminated strip of card. This is the 'slide' which the pupil pulls along to reveal one word at a time once the window is placed over the sentence to be copied.

Confidence and skills grow quickly and you can write work out ahead of time, leaving you free to assist other pupils whilst the pupil with copying problems has a measure of independence.
