Be a Special Friend
Topic: Classroom Management
(This idea was contributed by Karen Cowen)
Age Range: 5 to 11

During the weeks' lunchtimes, we ask the dinner nannies to take note of a child or children who have been a special friend to another. For example, if a child has fallen over and they help them, or if a child is alone and they ask them to join in with them, to be their friend and play in their game. We do try to choose at least one child from each class if possible and we have 8 classes.

Then on a Friday, we have a special table set out in the lunch hall named "THE TOP TABLE". Two teachers normally sit either end and enjoy their lunch with these children who have been good friends through the week, but thats not all.

We have a special assembly on a Friday in which we hand out certificates and give out head teachers awards and lollies to children who have had a birthday that week.

But this is when we find out who is on the top table. They are called out in assembly in front of the whole school and it certainly makes them feel proud, it boosts their morale for the rest of the day.

Try it - you will be pleasantly surprised!
