Times Table Aerobics
Subject: Maths
(This idea was contributed by Sue Jeremy)
Age Range: 7 to 11

This can be used as a mental starter or a quick wake up/5 minute filler - it's particularly useful to reinforce times tables knowledge.

I choose 2 -3 tables depending on time, often related ones eg 2's and 4's.

Demonstrate 2 or 3 aerobic moves, e.g. alternate twists at the waist, punching right to left and so on depending on how many tables you want to cover. Explain which move is for which table.

All the children stand up and gently jog on the spot (make sure everyone has room to stretch their arms out without touching anyone else). The children chant their tables while completing the aerobics moves.

I find the children love it - it can also be used as a PE warm up. It forces both sides of the brain to kick in, as the one side focuses on the movements the other side has to come up with the maths. It also encourages children to think ahead to the next part of the table to make sure they get it right.

I have found the children's tables knowledge has really improved if I use it 2 or 3 times a week and it helps wake them up and be ready to learn.

It's a good idea to close the classroom door as it can be noisy!
