Following on from the class mascot idea here, I have used a Maths Monster who goes home with a different student each night along with a list of maths activities he / she can 'help' the monster to try at home.
These activities can be general or more specific to fit in with current topic or theme. The activities are then recorded in a journal along with photos if taken, recipe ideas etc.
As this is done in a non-threatening environment, it may encourage children to try new concepts in Maths. Anyway if they get it wrong they can blame Maths Monster but of course learn from it's mistakes.
Each day the activity should be shared with the class which is a great time to assess students too.
