Maths Karate
Subject: Maths
(This idea was contributed by Tina Farr)
Age Range: 5 to 11

This is a great mental starter to learn the language of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

The teacher calls out the language i.e. 'plus', the children make a cross with their arms along with a karate type sound. For subtraction words they just use one arm going across their body. For multiplication it's an 'X' shape. For division it's one arm across the body with the other punching the air above and below (for the dots!) - all with relevant sound effects.

It's a bit mad but my year 3s absolutely love it and it gets them going in the afternoon!
