Using computers in suite/laptops. Children should have some knowledge already of 24hour clock/ how a timetable works.

Explain to children that they are breaking out of school. At 12:00 they are going to be dropped in the centre of the nearest town. They have 10 hours and unlimited funds to get as far away as they can. They must use the internet to find real bus, train, ferry etc timetables, and must be able to meet connections (i.e. use the timetable correctly!). They have to record all their times and connections so that the escape officer can ok their plans.

I offered a prize to the pair that got the furthest away on a journey that actually worked. It can be differentiated by offering the children more or less time e.g. if they have 12 hours or more they have to bridge through to the next day, less time means fewer possible connections.

It really worked well, and we got so carried away that we were late for lunch!
