English

  • Write your own story about a different ‘Hundred-Mile-An-Hour’ animal. This could be a pet, a wild animal or an endangered species.
  • The blurb describes Streaker as ‘a rocket on four legs’. Can you think of any other metaphors (or similes) to describe a fast animal?
  • Read the information about the author on the inside cover and think of some questions that you would like to ask him.
  • Can you find out more information about the author and write his biography?
  • Create a set of instructions to teach people how to look after the hundred-mile-an-hour dog.
  • Make a list of synonyms (and antonyms) for ‘fast’.
  • Write an entry from Trevor’s diary, based on part of the story.
  • Rewrite a page or chapter in the book from Streaker’s point of view.
  • In Chapter Two, Trevor gets dragged through the street market by Streaker. Can you write a newspaper report (or the police report) about this incident?
  • Create a table that shows the different words used to describe the main characters in the story (Trevor, mum, dad, Streaker, Tina, Charlie etc).
  • Write a letter from Trevor to his parents that explains what happened when he got locked inside the broom cupboard.
  • At the end of Chapter Nine, Sergeant Smugg threatens to have Streaker put down. Write a persuasive letter to him that encourages him to change his mind.
  • Think of some questions that you would like to ask the author. Here is a video in which he gives tips about writing funny stories:

Maths

  • Find out the distances from different places around the world to your home. How long would it take to get there if you could travel at one hundred miles an hour?
  • Trevor’s mum promises him thirty pounds if he walks Streaker every day in the holidays. Make a list of things that you could buy with thirty pounds. How much change would you get?

Science

  • Charlie puts frog-spawn in the bath at the park. Can you create a poster that teaches people about the life cycle of a frog?

Computing

  • Design a game in which Streaker is the main character.
  • Create a stop-motion animation about the hundred-mile-an-hour dog.
  • At one point in the story, Trevor mentions that his dad has a fax machine. What is this? Can you find out about other electronic methods of communication?

Design Technology

  • Design a vehicle that Trevor could travel in while being pulled behind Streaker. Could you make a model of this and test it in a race with your friends’ models?
  • Design your own dog-exercising machine. Could you make a prototype?

Art

  • Look at photos of animals moving quickly and use them as inspiration for your own art work.
  • Create illustrations for pages in the book that don’t have pictures.
  • Create a comic strip that retells part of the story.

Geography

  • Look on a map to find a large open space where Streaker could run. Plan the route from your home and back.
  • Create a map that shows the main locations in the story. Add labels to show the events that take place in each place.

PSHE

  • At the back of the book, there is a page with 14 1/2 things that you didn’t know about Jeremy Strong. Could you make a similar page about yourself?
