Starting Points for Databases

Shuffle playing cards and let the children sort them out by colours first and then by value.
This works very well when teaching sorting in databases, and also with number work in Maths.
Top Trumps are also a great starting point for database work (see this page for more ideas).
Lisa has contributed this idea... When teaching databases to children, I have them all line up and proceed to "sort" them by asking questions, such as if your birthday is in March take one step forward; if your birthday is in March and pizza is your favourite food then step forward. Once we do this a few times, I find the children are able to get their heads around the concept of being 'records'. Hope this helps someone else!
