Making Web Pages
Subject: I.C.T.
Age Range: 5 to 11

Web pages can be made in a number of different ways:

It's impossible to describe how to use every different type of web authoring software, but here are a few tips:

Saving Tips:

Customising the Text:

Using web authoring software is very similar to using a word processor. You can type the content of your site into the workspace. You can also change the font, size, style and alignment of this text:

Changing the Alignment:
Times New Roman
Size 1
Bold

Arial
Size 4
Italic

Verdana
Size 7
Underline
Right

It is important to remember when choosing fonts that not everyone has the same fonts on their system as you might have. It is best to choose fonts which are very common (e.g. Times New Roman, Arial, Verdana).

As well as the textual content, you can also add pictures and hyperlinks to your page:

Pictures

Before you add pictures to your page, you need to make sure that they are in one of two file formats:

GIF
JPG

To change the file format of an image, you will need to use a graphics program. When you have converted your pictures to GIFs or JPGs, remember to store them in your special web site folder. You should also try to shrink images (by resizing them) as much as possible in order to reduce the amount of time they take to download over the Internet.

Hyperlinks

A hyperlink is a word, section of text, or a picture which (when clicked on) causes an action to occur (most commonly, this action will involve taking the visitor to a different page, but can also start a file downloading). For example:

Can you click on the word in this sentence which is a hyperlink?

To insert a hyperlink in your page, first decide what you would like the hyperlink to be - a word? a sentence? or a picture? Select the word, sentence or picture and then add the hyperlink to it.

A window will appear, asking you to enter the name of the file / page which you wish to link to. There are two types of hyperlink:

If (for example) you are adding hyperlinks to a web page called index.htm (which is in 'websitefolder')

  • If the file which you are linking to (pagea.htm) is in the SAME folder as index.htm, you can simply point the hyperlink to 'pagea.htm'.

  • If the file which you are linking to (pageb.htm) is in a folder INSIDE websidefolder, point the hyperlink to 'folderz/pageb.htm'.

  • If the file which you are linking to (pagec.htm) is in a folder ABOVE websitefolder, point the hyperlink to '../pagec.htm'

Making a Title Page

When you have made a title page for your site, it is usually common practice to save it as 'index'. This is because when someone types in an address such as www.teachingideas.co.uk), they will actually visit the page "index.html" at your web address - the web site server automatically points you to the index page. If you give your index page a different name, your visitors might not be able to visit.

(on some servers, you need to name your index page 'default'.
Please check with the provider of your web space if you are unsure)
