Creating a Site
Subject: I.C.T.
Age Range: 5 to 11

If you know that you would like to make a web site, it can be difficult finding out how to start. Here are some things to think about first.

Content

The most important part of a web site is its content. If the site doesn't contain material which people want to look at, they won't visit. If you have unique content, which people are interested in, they should flock to your site (with some hard work and a little bit of luck!).

Before you begin, you will therefore need to think about what your site is going to contain. If it is going to be a site for your school, you could include:

Plan

Planning is as important in web site creation as it is in most other types of work. Therefore, you must have a clear idea of what your site is going to contain, and how it is all going to fit together.

It might be useful if you made a list of everything which you would like your site to contain, and then planned how you will link different sections. You might even try drawing a 'site map':

Internet Safety:

If you are making a school site, you will also need to think about Internet safety:

Take a look at other school sites and see how they are tackling Internet safety on their sites. Many have copies of their Internet rules for you to look at.

Start building:

When you have planned your site, and are just about to start making the first web page, it is recommended that you create a new folder on your computer. All of the web pages, images and sounds that you make and use in the site can then be kept in this new folder (and any subfolders you choose to make inside it). This enables you to organise your site more clearly, and helps considerably when you come to link the pages together with hyperlinks.
