Email Pictures
Subject: I.C.T.
(This idea was contributed by Debbie Illingworth)
Age Range: 7 to 11

This activity involves using Microsoft Paint (or a similar paint program) for a joint school activity. It deals with a number of curriculum subjects, including Art (study of an artist - in this case the artist is Mondrian), Literacy (describing the Art work), Maths (using mathematical language) and ICT (using email).

Before you begin, you will need to have an email link set up with another school.

Two schools should each choose a different Mondrian pic (one of the straight black lines / blocks of colour variety) and write a descriptive email to the other school about it. These descriptions should be as clear as possible, and should use mathematical language (e.g. black vertical line one third of the way across the top, red square in bottom right hand corner etc).

When the children have completed their descriptions, they should email these to their partner school. When each school has received their partner's description, they should have a go at recreating the artwork using their paint program.

When the recreated work is finished, the results can be sent back to the originating school as attachments.

Children have to use language precisely, and review their instructions in the light of the other schools interpretations.
