Learning about People

Contributed by:

Age Range: 5 to 11

Either prior to or after completing a class 'dig' (artefacts hidden in a sand pit) try this activity to help children understand how we use artefacts to find out about people from the past.

Organise a bag of objects that somebody might find in your bin. Show one object at a time and discuss what this might tell us about that person, for example:

  • an old lipstick - it's a girl
  • a cat food packet - they like animals and has a pet cat.
  • a Harry Potter book- might be a young person who enjoys reading

You can differentiate the task by changing the number of items and the type of items you use.

As an extension, the children can then write down a list of some items people might find in their bin and what it says about them.
