Using Sports Events
Subject: Geography
(This idea was contributed by A Jenkinson)
Age Range: 7 to 11

Use the World Cup / Commonwealth games to get children to locate different countries around the world.

Plot on a world map (paired activity worked well) and find the countries flags. Each group can then research about a given country investigating climate, culture, economy etc. Higher abilities can discuss routes to Japan or Manchester, calculating mileage and time differences.

All 32 children in my class have a country to follow for the World Cup and they love it!
