Age Range: 5 to 11

The purpose of this activity is to make the children aware about differences between foreign culture and society. It can be used as an Icebreaker.

Handshakes, smiles, winks, kissing on cheeks/in the air, come here, go away, some gestures can be acceptable in some countries and not in others, they can also mean very different things.

Gather together some model gestures, make sure they are polite for primary children!

Stand the class up and tell them to watch what you do.

To the child at the front of the class say 'This is a/C'est un(e) ...'

The child then says 'A what?/Un(e) quoi?'

You repeat 'This is a/C'est un(e) ...'

The child then turns around and passes it to the next child repeating what you said.

After the first gesture has travelled around six children or so start another gesture going.

If you have a classroom assistant he/she can start the gestures going from the other side of the class and they will meet in the middle saving time.

This is great fun and can wake up even the most shy retiring class.
