Ring a Word

Contributed by:
Eve Harrison
Age Range: 5 to 11

This game can be used to teach number, letter recognition, days of the week and months, food names etc.

The explanation below uses the example of teaching numbers.

  • Pre-teach the numbers a week before.
  • Write the numbers you are teaching randomly across the board and make sure you have two or more of each number.
  • Divide the class into teams, give the teams different coloured pens and call out a number.
  • The children have to race to ring the number on the board.
  • The winning team is the one with most rings at the end.
  • For groups having difficulty you can allow them a hint, for example getting the whole class to count to twenty in the target language.
  • To make it easier make sure there are the same number of numbers as there are teams! Or write the numbers (mixed-up) in columns so there is no scrum when trying to ring them on the board!
