Using Spellings
Subject: Literacy
(This idea was contributed by Emma Jane Cook)
Age Range: 5 to 11

Using the spellings list for the week, get the children to choose a genre and then use 5 or more of their spellings to create a piece of written English.

Poems and Stories come out well but try to encourage them to try a descriptive shopping list, diary, letter or even wanted or lost and found adverts, the older children can obviously have more inventive work, whilst youngest can create stories of "interesting" content.

If you want you can use topic words or choose 5 or 6 words you just dropped a pen on in a dictionary, there is no end of opportunities with this starting point. Any genre can be focused on and any words could be specified, it means you have a variety of things to mark, HOORAY!

Editing or re-drafting really should be encouraged or get the children to choose a genre they don't feel too confident in, or get them to use the same words but two different genre?!
