Spelling Tips
Subject: Literacy
(This idea was contributed by Kristina LeGuardia)
Age Range: 5 to 11

My students' first five spelling words have the same phonogram. To help my ESOL students and the students who struggle with their spelling words, I put them in a small group and give them each five index cards, a red marker and a blue marker. We write the initial consonant (i.e. "h") in blue and the phonogram (i.e. -ot) in red. This helps the students to see the phonogram pattern and greatly improved their spelling scores.
