Spelling Sentences

Contributed by:

Age Range: 7 to 11

In order to make spelling tests more fun, I challenge the children to each make up a sentence using one of our spelling words as I read out the spellings, so that they each have a different word.

The twist is that the sentence has to be linked with spellings so, for example, if the spellings were suffixes '-ness', one child may have the word 'kindness' and make it into a sentence such as 'I hope that my teacher will show kindness to me even if I get my spellings wrong!' This causes much amusement and helps the children to remember the context in which the word is used. That child would then have to attempt to spell that word when we go through the correct spellings at the end. If they are unsuccessful, they can nominate someone else to have a go.

It is a good way to make sure everyone is involved and not just the good spellers!
