When the time comes that students need to learn to find books in the library by the author's last name, give them this simple test:
Take about 5 library books that have the author's last name on a tag on the spine, shuffle them, put them in a stack, and divide the children into groups of three to be 'working partners.' Have each group come up, individually, and give them the stack of books.
Tell them to find the author's last name on the book, and to lay them out, in a straight line in ABC order, from A-Z. Also tell them that they all have to share the chance to voice their opinions to order the books.
When they are finished, if they are correct, let them pick a candy or a sticker. If they are incorrect, let them try again, giving them help if needed.
