Learning from Talking Books

Contributed by:

Age Range: 5 to 11

I find that children of parents of a non-english speaking background always struggle for the first 3-4 years of schooling to compete with kids from english speaking homes. So I have experimented with a few things to assist my child to compete with the top English performers. I find that technology really helps.

I pick up lots of talking books, convert them into MP3 format and store on a pocket PC. The advantage of a pocket PC is that it is small and takes 1 second to turn on. The use of quality talking book read by professional English readers really improve kids' comprehension, listening skill and pronunciation.

Further more I buy a unit of bluetooth speakers so the pocket pc can wirelessly beam the sound to this unit. the quality of the sound is far better.

As I cannot give my own child the best English pronunciation, the use of technology and quality talking books really helps.
