Hot Potato!
Subject: Literacy
(This idea was contributed by Julie Riedel)
Age Range: 5 to 7

This activity is to help students grasp the idea of consonant blends.

After reviewing the sounds of specified blends, we form a circle and play a "hot potato' type game (I use a bean bag).

The leader says a word which starts with a blend, i.e. "small", then tosses the bean bag to another child, who has to say a word that starts with the same blend as "small".

That child then tosses to another child and can say "change it". The child who gets the bean bag has to come up with a new blend, and continues as before.
