To make children concentrate on getting common homophones correct, have a piece of card with 'This weeks homophone' on it and underneath a homophone such as Where - 'where is the cat?' Wear -'I want to wear my new jeans'.
For the coming week, if the children use the word where or wear they have to make sure they get it right as a matter of priority.
Change the homophone weekly (just write them on a piece of card and blue tac it in place).
