Correct the Homophones
Subject: Literacy
(This idea was contributed by Michele Papageorghiou)
Age Range: 7 to 11

A homophone is a word which has the same sound as another (even though they may be spelt differently), e.g. sun and son.

This activity is based on a worksheet, which can be found here. It contains a story in which some of the words have been replaced by words which sound the same, but are spelt differently. Children who use the sheet should therefore correct the homophones (which are underlined), by altering the spellings of the underlined words.

The story also has a cliff-hanger ending. After they have corrected the homophones, the children could try to continue it. What might happen to the hares? Will they escape?
