George's Marvellous Medicine Activities
Subject: Literacy
(This idea was contributed by Heather Rawe)
Age Range: 5 to 11

Based on George's Marvellous Medicine, I broke my lessons down into 6 sessions.

1. I can describe a character. (I made a copy of Quentin Blake's drawings of George and Grandma and asked pupils to write characteristics around the pictures. More able pupils could use these to write descriptive sentences.)
2. I can reflect on the story from Grandma's point of view. ( I dressed up as 'Grandma' and was hot seated by pupils, answering their questions in role.
3. I can describe Grandma's medicine. A clip art picture of a bottle was given to the children (download it here Word Document). They had to write up the 'recipe' including the ingredients and the method, around the picture.
4. I can describe the effects on humans.
5. I can describe the effects on animals. ( I encouraged listening by reading a short section (download it here Word Document) and then giving them the same section cut up to reorder!).
6. I can write a review of the story.
